Easter

Easter…we have been so lucky this year with the weather. Easter time has almost felt like summer some days. I love it. I’m worried about the tree’s budding and then getting a frost though. That would be a disaster for the fruit farmers all over southern  Ontario.

I love the color of these tulips…kind of a cherry shade. I’ll plant them in my garden later.

Old Family Recipes

Memories….So many of our best memories can be triggered by a scent of something cooking or baking in the oven. Lately I’ve had an interest in preserving family recipes so they won’t be lost. I also plan on framing some of the ones that mean the most to me to hang in my kitchen, You can tell they have been made frequently and often dripped and dropped on.

This recipe is the cake I always asked my mom to bake for my birthday. We grew raspberries in our backyard and always had frozen ones on hand. She would use a maple fudge icing on the top.   recipes 003

recipes 004 We had many, many pecan pies, always baked on Sat. for dinner on Sun. The pecans were usually bought down in South Carolina, and brought back just for these pies.recipes 007

I think my Grandma wrote this recipe…after reading it over….I have no idea what “star shape beets” are. Have you ever grown any? recipes 009

Molly’s Cookie Treats are one of my favorites….I haven’t made these for years…I think I might  just have to go and bake some right now!

Chocolate Fudge was a Christmas tradition. Always a nice treat to have in the house when friends stop in!

The flowers were gorgeous…in the cold days of winter, they are always so refreshing. Everyone in our family have summer birthdays but me….although it’s always something to celebrate in a month with no holidays. Good food…family…good friends….100_0996 100_0998 100_0999

My husband baked the cakes and then my daughter helped with the icing….didn’t they turn out cute.  They were delish…thanks to Betty Crocker who now makes gluten free cake mixes in Canada. Yum. They sure didn’t last long.

MARCH

Well here it is March already. We’ve really gotten off easy this winter! This is a great time of year to sort through drawers and closets that you never get to in the busy days of warmer weather.

I love playing with the pictures that I do have and making them into something new.

Never Enough Thyme

In today’s busy world….I find it’s the DEstressing pastimes that people are cutting out of their lives.  Like taking the time to stop  and smell the roses

If you ask older people what they should have spent more time doing, it’s always agreed that friends and family are what matter, and where you should be spending your time and energy. We need to indulge ourselves in reading a book, taking the time to teach a friend to knit. writing a quick note of thanks to someone.

While my daughter’s been home with her broken ankle we have spent time knitting and crocheting. We started to crochet a new pattern of scarf… you may have seen something like them and wondered how they were made. It’s so relaxing…and when you’re finished you have that sense of accomplishment and the added bonus when someone complements you on it.

This is the pattern we used and it was so fun and easy to make.

Getting Ready

Well, it was a busy day today….getting all ready for Good Friday. It’s my job to decorate the church, and I love buying the flowers and decorating. Although it’s something you can’t do ahead of time, which means alot of running around in crowds when you could be at home coloring easter eggs or baking something yummy for an early breakfast.

After just seeing alot of snow and ice for the last few months….I must admit the color of fresh flowers, and the smell of tulips and hyacinth’s was heavenly.

Next thing to do on my list is make a lasagna and a perogie lasagna.    http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,188,151164-226204,00.html

If you like perogies….you will love this. It’s a crowd pleaser.

We can’t ever forget the reason we celebrate this holiday….it’s not about a bunny and eggs.

These two youtubes do an excellent job of reminding us to stop and reflect on the real story. Only one man died for us…to give us everlasting life. What an amazing sacrifice. What a life! To think he only lived on the earth for 33 years and His story has been told for centuries. Listen to it again……
